The Vehicle Diagnostic Process
The process begins when you schedule service and describe the warning light, performance change, unusual sound, or other concern you’ve noticed. Those details give our technicians a starting point for focused vehicle testing.
Here’s what to expect:
- Scheduling & Vehicle Handoff: Tell us what the vehicle is doing, when the concern occurs, and which dashboard warning lights are illuminated.
- Diagnostics & Inspection: Our technicians use manufacturer-level equipment to test the relevant vehicle systems. They also inspect for visible concerns that electronic testing alone won’t reveal.
- Digital Vehicle Inspection: We text you a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) report containing technician pictures, videos, and notes.
- Service Advisor Review: A service advisor explains the findings, identifies urgent safety needs and future maintenance, and reviews your repair options.
- Repair Authorization: We perform or schedule work only after you approve the written estimate.
Diagnostic scan tools communicate with your vehicle’s computer and retrieve diagnostic trouble codes. A code provides a direction for further testing, while the inspection and technician’s findings establish what service should be recommended.
Our goal is to give you a documented picture of the vehicle’s condition and the information needed to decide what happens next. You’ll know which findings need attention now, which can be planned for later, and what work you’re authorizing.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
What Your Check Engine Light Means
Your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system turns on the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light when it detects a malfunction or deterioration affecting an emissions-related system. It also stores a diagnostic trouble code in the vehicle computer’s memory for a scan tool to retrieve and a technician to test.
Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing Check Engine light indicates a severe engine misfire. Reduce your speed and seek service as soon as possible because continued driving with an active misfire can damage emission-control components.
Steady Check Engine Light
A steady light still calls for vehicle testing, even when the car seems to drive normally. Schedule service and note related symptoms such as rough running, reduced power, or changes in fuel use so you can share them when scheduling.
OBD-II Code Reading vs. Professional Vehicle Testing
OBD-II is the onboard diagnostic system that scan tools communicate with to retrieve diagnostic trouble codes. Gasoline passenger cars and light trucks from model year 1996 onward that were sold in the United States have OBD-II systems.
Reading a trouble code isn’t the same as diagnosing the vehicle. The code identifies a system condition that needs further testing, but it doesn’t establish the required repair by itself. Replacing a component based only on the code can leave the underlying concern unresolved.
We use the stored code as a starting point, then perform vehicle testing to identify the real issue behind it. We document the results and review them with you before any repair work moves forward.
Computer Diagnostics & Minnesota Vehicle Inspections
Minnesota doesn’t require periodic statewide safety or emissions inspections for privately owned passenger vehicles. The state’s vehicle emissions-testing program ended in 1999. Minnesota’s annual safety inspection requirement applies to specified commercial motor vehicles, not personal passenger vehicles.
A computer diagnostic test identifies concerns recorded by or affecting the vehicle’s monitored systems. It isn’t a state inspection, and it doesn’t replace routine maintenance or the technician testing needed to determine the correct repair.
What to Expect from Your Diagnostic Visit
Our ASE-certified technicians perform diagnostic services using manufacturer-level equipment. The testing required depends on the concern, so the diagnostic cost varies according to the work needed to identify the issue. We don’t recommend repairs based only on a retrieved code.
Your Digital Vehicle Inspection includes technician photos and notes shared with you. A service advisor explains the findings and provides a written estimate for recommended work. The estimate and your authorization establish the scope of the repair work you’ve approved.
We work with all major extended warranty providers. If your vehicle has this coverage, tell us when scheduling so we can confirm the available information for the diagnostic service and any recommended work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chanhassen driving conditions and warranty terms can both affect how you plan diagnostic service and repairs.
How Can Chanhassen Driving Conditions Affect Vehicle Systems?
Cold Minnesota winters can strain the battery and starting system, while road salt contributes to wear on braking components. Humid summers place added demand on air conditioning and cooling systems. Driving along the Highway 5 corridor also exposes vehicles to changing temperatures and stop-and-go conditions. Warning lights or drivability changes call for vehicle testing rather than assumptions based on the weather alone.
How Can I Confirm Extended Warranty Coverage?
Tell us about your coverage when scheduling diagnostic service. We work with all major providers and can confirm available coverage information before repair work proceeds. Coverage decisions depend on your provider and the terms of your specific contract.
