Check Engine Light Service in Irving

Full Service Diagnostic Testing That Goes Beyond the Fault Code

When your check engine light comes on, your vehicle’s onboard computer has detected a fault in the engine, emissions, or a related system. At Christian Brothers Automotive Valley Ranch, our ASE-certified technicians go beyond basic fault codes to identify the condition causing the light. We use manufacturer-quality diagnostic equipment and a documented inspection process that shows you what we found and why it matters.

A flashing check engine light signals an active engine fault that needs prompt diagnostic attention. A solid light indicates a fault that still needs to be diagnosed, even when the vehicle appears to drive normally. In either situation, a code identifies the system reporting the problem, while diagnostic testing determines what caused it.

Our Process for Check Engine Light Services

  • Complete Diagnostics & Inspections: Our technicians use diagnostic equipment and targeted testing to identify the cause of the code.
  • Receive Your Inspection Report: We text you a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with photos and videos of the findings and recommendations.
  • Review & Approve: A service advisor explains each finding. You can ask questions and approve recommended work before repairs proceed.
  • Complete or Schedule the Repair: After approval, we complete the work during the visit or schedule it for a later visit when needed.

What to Share When Scheduling a Diagnostic Appointment

You don’t need to diagnose the problem before scheduling, but a few observations give the technician useful context. Note whether the light stays solid or flashes, when you first noticed it, and whether it appeared after a recent change in how the vehicle runs.

Helpful details to provide include:

  • Warning-light behavior: Explain whether the light is steady, flashing continuously, or flashing only under certain driving conditions.
  • Performance changes: Mention rough running, reduced power, hesitation, or an unusual change in fuel use.
  • Timing and conditions: Note whether the light appeared after refueling, during acceleration, at idle, or in another specific situation.

If possible, leave the check engine light and diagnostic information intact rather than clearing the code before the appointment.

Symptoms That Can Accompany a Check Engine Light

A vehicle can display a check engine light without an obvious change in performance. That doesn’t make the underlying condition unimportant. It means the vehicle’s onboard computer detected an issue that requires testing to identify.

Other drivers notice rough idle, hesitation, reduced acceleration, or changes in fuel use when the light appears. Tell the service advisor when each symptom occurs and whether it changes as the engine warms up, the vehicle accelerates, or the car sits at a stop.

We evaluate the light and symptoms together. Your observations provide context, while equipment testing and component inspection identify the condition behind the diagnostic code.

A Warranty That Goes Where You Go

Every repair we complete at Christian Brothers Automotive Valley Ranch is covered by the Nice Difference® Warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs last. The coverage is honored at Christian Brothers Automotive Valley Ranch locations nationwide, including beyond the Irving shop where the work was done.

Check Engine Lights & Dallas County Emissions Testing

Gasoline-powered vehicles registered in Dallas County that are 2 through 24 years old require an OBD-II emissions test before annual registration renewal. Because Irving is in Dallas County, this requirement applies to qualifying vehicles registered to Irving addresses.

An active check engine light causes an automatic emissions-test failure. The OBD-II test checks the vehicle’s emissions-monitoring system, so clearing the light immediately before an inspection doesn’t resolve the underlying fault and can leave readiness monitors incomplete.

Texas ended annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, but emissions inspections remain required for qualifying Dallas County vehicles. Electric vehicles, diesel vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds are exempt from emissions inspection in affected Texas counties.

Diagnostic Estimates & Repair Timing

Diagnostic testing identifies the fault before repair work is authorized. Once testing is complete, we review the findings with you and provide an upfront estimate before work begins. You decide whether to approve the recommended repair after you understand what was found.

Diagnostic charges and repair costs are separate, so ask what diagnostic charges apply when scheduling. Repair timing depends on the diagnosed condition, required parts, and work needed. Approved repairs are completed during the visit or scheduled for a later appointment when needed.

What Your Check Engine Light Is Actually Telling You

The malfunction indicator lamp, commonly called the check engine light, activates when your vehicle’s onboard computer logs a fault. The resulting code identifies the system reporting an issue, but it doesn’t automatically identify the failed component. Multiple conditions can produce codes within the same fault family, which is why testing must come before selecting a repair.

Common Causes Worth Knowing

Some of the most frequent triggers our technicians diagnose include:

  • A loose or faulty gas cap causing an evaporative emissions system leak
  • A failing oxygen sensor affecting fuel trim and emissions readings
  • A malfunctioning catalytic converter reducing emissions performance
  • A faulty mass airflow sensor disrupting the air-fuel mixture
  • Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils causing misfires
  • Transmission or broader emissions system faults

Reading a diagnostic code narrows the search. Our technicians use diagnostic equipment and component inspection to identify the condition causing the code rather than replacing a part based on the code alone.

How Irving Driving Conditions Affect Your Check Engine Light

Pay attention to the conditions present when the light appears. A light that comes on during highway acceleration, after refueling, at idle, or in stop-and-go traffic gives the technician useful context about when the vehicle’s computer detected the fault.

Also note whether the vehicle behaves differently as the engine warms up or when accessories such as the air conditioning are operating. These observations don’t replace diagnostic testing, but they help our technicians evaluate the alert alongside the conditions you experienced while driving in Irving.

Check Engine Light Service with an Extended Warranty

If your vehicle is covered by an extended warranty, bring that information when you schedule. We work with all major extended warranty providers and can help confirm coverage before any repair work begins. A list of the extended warranty companies we work with is available on our extended warranty service page.

Coverage depends on your individual plan and the repair identified through diagnosis. Confirming coverage before authorization establishes whether the recommended work is eligible, while your review of the diagnostic findings and estimate remains a separate step.

FAQs

  • Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"
A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
  • Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"
If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
  • Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"
As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
  • Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"
Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
  • Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"
We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
  • Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"
It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
