Our Check Engine Light Diagnostic Process
We use a five-stage process to move from the symptoms you report to documented findings, an estimate, and an informed repair decision. The required testing depends on the code and how the vehicle is operating, so we don’t assign a fixed diagnostic or repair time before evaluating it.
Describe What the Vehicle Is Doing
When arranging your appointment, tell us when the light appeared. Describe any rough idling, reduced power, stalling, or unusual smells you’ve noticed. These details give our technicians useful context for reproducing the concern and selecting the appropriate tests.
Evaluate Codes, Sensors & Systems
Our ASE-certified technicians inspect the vehicle with manufacturer-quality diagnostic equipment. They review stored codes, system communication, and live sensor data to see how sensors and related components behave while the vehicle is operating. The goal is to trace the light to its source rather than treat the code as a parts list.
Receive Documented Findings & an Estimate
We send the Digital Vehicle Inspection report by text after the diagnostic work is complete. It contains photos and videos showing relevant findings, along with a repair estimate for the recommended work. You receive that information before repairs begin.
Ask Questions & Authorize Repairs
A service advisor connects the diagnostic results to the repair options in clear language. You can ask questions, consider the available choices, and authorize work by phone or through the Digital Vehicle Inspection report. Your vehicle stays at the diagnosis stage until you approve a repair.
Complete Repairs or Plan the Next Visit
Some check engine light repairs are completed during the initial visit. If a needed part isn’t available, we coordinate a return visit with you. We can also plan another appointment when that better fits your schedule, rather than promising a completion time before the diagnosis is known.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Preparing for Your Diagnostic Appointment
Here’s what to look for before you call us. Note when the check engine light first appeared and whether it stays solid or flashes. Also record any change in starting, acceleration, idling, fuel economy, or exhaust smell. You don’t need to identify the cause yourself. A clear description of what changed helps us understand the concern you’re experiencing.

Why Clearing the Code Doesn’t Fix the Fault
Clearing a stored code removes the warning and can turn off the check engine light temporarily. It doesn’t repair the condition that caused the vehicle’s monitoring system to record the fault. If that condition remains active or happens again, the system records another code and the light returns.
A scan is a starting point, not a completed diagnosis. Testing the affected system and reviewing vehicle data identifies the source of the fault before repair decisions are made.
What Your Check Engine Light Is Telling You
The check engine light is part of the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system. It illuminates when the system records an engine, emissions, fuel, ignition, or related operating condition outside its expected parameters.
The indicator confirms that the vehicle needs diagnosis, but it doesn’t name a definitive repair. The behavior of the light helps determine how quickly you should respond.
Flashing vs. Solid: Urgency at a Glance
The behavior of the light matters as much as its presence. A flashing check engine light signals an active, serious problem, commonly an engine misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Don’t continue driving. Pull over in a safe location and arrange service.
A solid check engine light means the vehicle has logged a fault that needs attention soon. The vehicle is generally safe to drive to a repair shop, but continuing to ignore the warning can allow the underlying condition to worsen.

Common Causes of a Check Engine Light
A diagnostic trouble code identifies a system or sensor area, not the definitive cause. An oxygen sensor code, for example, can reflect a fuel-mixture imbalance or an exhaust leak rather than a failed sensor. Diagnostic testing confirms the source before a component is replaced.
Common areas investigated during check engine light diagnosis include:
- Loose or Faulty Gas Cap: A cap that doesn’t seal correctly affects fuel-system pressure and evaporative-emissions integrity. The cap and related system still need testing before the fault is confirmed.
- Oxygen Sensor Concern: The oxygen sensor monitors oxygen levels in the exhaust so the engine can regulate its fuel-to-air ratio. The sensor, wiring, exhaust system, and fuel mixture can all affect the data it reports.
- Catalytic Converter Degradation: The catalytic converter processes exhaust emissions. Reduced converter performance can affect emissions control and fuel efficiency.
- Mass Airflow Sensor Malfunction: This sensor measures incoming air so the engine can calculate the required fuel mixture. Incorrect readings can contribute to poor performance, stalling, or increased fuel consumption.
- Ignition System Faults: Worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils can cause engine misfires that trigger the check engine light and affect vehicle performance.
Because several conditions can produce similar codes and symptoms, replacing the component named in a code description isn’t a reliable diagnostic method. We evaluate how the connected systems are operating before recommending a repair.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-

"Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. -
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
